The sangfroid of these ladies,’ writes Dheera, ‘their ability to smilingly sustain themselves and face life, which for them is a daily challenge, left me feeling diminutive.

The lone nonfiction book for adults, From Darkness to Light, was commissioned by the National Association for the Blind (NAB) while Dheera was recording storybooks for their talking library.
At the time, the Neelam Kanga Memorial Fund at NAB had completed twenty years of existence and decided to produce a book profiling the lives of twenty-five women achievers who had risen to great heights after losing their sight.
NAB invited Dheera to write the book. The research and her conversations with these indomitable women humbled her and transformed her perspective. These twenty-five courageous
women opened their hearts, allowing Dheera a glimpse into their journeys of struggle and triumph. Some wept as they recounted their stories; others were wistful. Yet none were bitter or angry, deeply grateful.
